In cabinet planning, the use of CAD (computer-aided design) to generate sketches of the design concept can be very helpful; however, in furniture design this tends to be too non-specific, and can only be used as a starting point, unless we are designing very rectilinear furniture.
There really isn’t any substitute for seeing something before you as a 3-D object, being able to walk around it to get a sense of how it will fit in with your overall decor. Curvilinear furniture design generally requires a miniature model, full-scale mockup (usually of cardboard or another inexpensive material), or both to establish proportions and geometry.
